Professional Development Plan Part 1
What would you like to achieve from this paper - goals and objectives
I think that many of us regularly ask ourselves the question, “How effective am I as a teacher?” I know that I have done this often.
As I continue to seek professional development opportunities and extend my professional reading, I think that my question has changed from ‘How effective am I as a teacher?” to “ Is effective all that I want to be, or do I want to be more than that?” What makes a teacher excellent, exceptional, inspirational, motivational, creative, forward thinking, open to change, or even revolutionary? The question that I need to ask myself is “ Where do I sit on this continuum? “ In Full Circles, Overlapping Lives (2000), Mary Catherine Bateson calls on a new definition of the self as a learner, not one based on what I do or know but one premised on 'what I am willing to learn.'
Through this course of study, I hope to examine my practice in one or more areas and to use this reflection to improve myself as a willing teacher learner. Through professional reading and discussion with colleagues, I want to examine different teaching practices that are already in use, and to think about these critically, with the intention of clarifying my own pedagogy and teaching philosophy. In the true sense of Constructivism, I want to build on my existing knowledge of practice, make connections, and improve. I want to examine existing theories of practice because there is scientific and analytical evidence that supports the idea that a shift in traditional learning theories.
I am open to new learning and new ideas and so I am hopeful that there will also be the opportunity to learn about new teaching strategies and pedagogies, which I will be able to adopt and implement.
I also want to improve my own professional knowledge through professional reading and discussion with colleagues throughout the year.
It is really important for me that what I learn from this year of professional development and study, I action and implement in my teaching.
I hope to be able to share my learning from this paper with colleagues in my present working environment as we work towards establishing a professional learning community. Benjamin Franklin said, “There are three sorts of people in the world: immovable, movable, and those who move.” (Ben Franklin) As an educator in the 21st century I want to be one 'who moves.'
I want to have a teachable spirit and to be a risk taker, opening my mind to people’s ideas, student’s opinions and views, pedagogies, and teaching and learning tools. In so doing, I believe that I will benefit from this course of study and the development of my Professional Practice Portfolio.
